‘Youths should stand for their rights’

Youths in Fiji should stand for their rights says member of Youth Parliament 2015, Nate Wesele.
The 25-year-old joined more than hundreds of people who took part in the march to mark World Human Rights Day in Suva last Wednesday.
“I want to encourage youths to stand for the rights. I want to spend most of time on advocating on youth issues and about their rights,” she said.
Ms Wesele said 97 per cent of youths in Fiji did not know their rights.
“I did my research on youth issues and then planned to be part of Youth Parliament 2015 to empower youth,” she said.
Ms Wesele added that it was her dream to empower youths to know their rights and help people of Fiji.
National Youth Council of Fiji president Wiliame Nayacatabu said: “Youth rights are human rights.
“Youth voice matters and National Youth Council of Fiji is here to help youths raise their voices,” he said.
Mr Nayacatabu said in most areas in Fiji, youth’s voices are taken lightly and sometimes not heard.
“We want youths to raise their voices and share their views and knowledge with us,” he said.
Mr Nayacatabu said the National Youth Council had representatives from all over Fiji.
“When the youths face any challenges or problem they are there to bring their issues to the council. Their voice is then heard through the youth council.
“Youths should stand for their rights,” he added.
