Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto.

You cannot lead people that you do not know, says the acting Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto.

He made the remarks yesterday while officiating as chief guest at the Fiji Navy Commissioning Parade of six midshipmen to the rank of Ensign at the Stanley Brown Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

“Honesty and integrity is necessary as it helps to build trust. It is imperative that you strive to be trustworthy rather than popularity,” Rear Admiral Naupoto said.

He said mistakes were bound to happen and also those under their command could also make mistakes.

“When they do, do not run away from them. Help them learn from their mistake, encourage and motivate them to move on.

“As officers we place the interest of those under our command, the interest of the unit and the interest of the institution first before our interest. This is what we referred to as selfless service,” he said.

He also reiterated on the need for the RFMF to lead by example in the protection of women in Fiji.

He said it was part of the policy implemented last week to have zero tolerance on violence against women.
