Rising sea levels brought about by climate change is a big threat to maritime islanders in the Northern Division, says Joeli Cawaki.

The Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development made the comments after touring 11 islands with Government officials last week.

“This was evident at islands like Yanuca, Dreketi, Qamea in Cakaudrove and Kia in Macuata as well,” he said.

Ministry of Agriculture senior technical assistant Jese Midralawa said Government had engaged in preventative measures on the island to slow the effects of climate change.

“Because of the rise in sea level, many islanders have decided to build seawalls,” Mr Midralawa said.

He said the rise in sea levels was clearly visible in Yanuca, Dreketi and Kia.

Yaro Village headman Peniasi Asuka said, “The sea level rise in Fiji has affected many places like my village forcing them to relocate.

“We actually need to talk about this and we say to the rich countries not to disadvantage us.”

He is appealing to other developed countries to use the wealth they have achieved through the resources of the Pacific such as tuna, corals, and seaweed to boost the fight to reduce the impact of sea level rise to many villages like this.
