Fiji’s Head Of Delegation Addresses Working Session At The World Integration Of Pacific States Forum In Rabat

A two-member Fijian delegation is currently in Rabat, Morocco at the invitation of the government of Morocco and the Crans Montana Forum to attend the World Integration of the Pacific States Forum.

The purpose of the forum is to engage in strategic and high level discussions on the key challenges and opportunities facing Pacific States.

It is also to explore areas and opportunities to engage in areas of mutual interest.

Fiji’s head of delegation and resident Counsellor to Brussels, Nidhendra Singh  addressed the forum during a working session titled “Public Health: A priority for the Pacific Islands.”

The keynote address and the moderation of the session was undertaken by Laprophan Pharmaceuticals. Mr Singh stated that Fiji, like most Pacific Islands countries, has a serious problem with non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

He added that although Fiji has for sometime been promoting the notion of ‘Healthy Islands’, there is a realisation that there were challenges in addressing NCDs such as changing mindsets, availability of poor quality food and the accessibility to specialist medical services.

Mr Singh also informed the forum on latest developments in Fiji’s NCD initiatives such as the recent partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the establishment of a Cancer Radiotherapy Centre and the launching of a training manual for Fiji’s Community Health Workers (CHWs) programme.

Mr Singh stated that Fiji is committed to improve healthcare accessibility for patients, promote innovation and collaboration in the medical technology sector as well as investing in its primary-care- infrastructure.
