Water Carting Demands Increase In West

The request for emergency water supplies has increased on a daily basis in the Western Division, says divisional planning officer west, Sitiveni Tavaga.

Mr Tavaga said calls for transporting of water had become frequent and the demand had increased as people continued to struggle under the  dry spell.

“Currently we have supplied more than 14 million liters of water in various parts of the western division.

“At the moment we are carting water in between Nadi and Sigatoka,” he said.

Mr Tavaga said 17 trucks from the Commissioner Western’s office helped cart water to drought stricken areas.

He added the operational cost for water carting had reached $500,000 excluding the cost of water.

“We have other trucks and we collaborate with the Water Authority of Fiji to assist when the demand increases.

The office also expressed their disappointment after noticing regular misuse of water and reiterated for people to use water sparingly.

“We are receiving calls from the same community or home every second or third day after trucks have carted water.

“They are saying that the water supplied is not enough,” Mr Tavaga said.

He said the dry season was affecting a lot of households in the western division and the office was doing their best in carting fresh water to affected homes
