Marika Gets Wheelchair As Christmas Gift

Marika Niumataiwalu, 5, of Wasavulu Village, Labasa was joyful after Fiji Red Cross Society Labasa Branch president Viliame Cocker delivered a wheelchair to his doorstep yesterday.
It was donated by Viti Spinal Injury Association.
When Fiji Sun asked Marika how he felt about receiving a wheelchair for a Christmas gift, he smiled showing hand peace sign and said, “Au Marau’ (I am happy).
His mother Wainisi Bui, grandmother Mereani Dakai and grandfather Isimeli Dakai emotionally thanked Mr Cocker for the timely assistance.
Mrs Bui said Marika was born premature and after four months of delivery she found out that he was not turning over or making any leg movement (delay milestone).
“Since then my family have been taking turns to carry him around at home or outside,” Mrs Bui said.
She said Marika was her only child.
“Marika has been telling me he wanted to go to kindergarten from next year. Now with the provision of this wheelchair we can take him to the kindergarten next year.”
Fiji Red Cross Society Health and Care Co-ordinator Marica Kepa said they would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to deliver services to the most vulnerable in our communities in Fiji.
