Sentencing For Ex-Cop Deferred

A former Police corporal charged with bribery-related offences had his sentencing deferred by the Magistrates Court in Suva yesterday.
Setoki Tevita, charged with three counts of bribery contrary to Section 4 of the Prevention of Bribery Promulgation No.12 2007, appeared before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa.
It is alleged that between October 25 and October 31 in 2013 Taveta accepted an advantage of $1650 from one Areez Ahmed Khan.
The Prosecution also noted an anomaly in the defence mitigation submission.
The court heard that in the Defence submission, it was stated that the accused had pleaded guilty to all three counts of bribery, however, Prosecution said this was not the case and that the accused had not, at any point, pleaded guilty to the charges.
The Prosecution also stated that the court, in its judgement on April 8, found the accused guilty of all three counts of bribery through the trial and hearing conducted by court.
Magistrate Boseiwaqa has adjourned the matter to February 3 next year for sentencing..
