Students of the University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) recently participated in a International Coastal Clean-up Day.

Assistant lecturer Marika Kuilamu, who also manages STHM’s social responsibility programme, said: “From a tourism destination perspective, this initiative is very important. A clean environment counteracts visible pollution and is therefore essential for both destination residents and tourists alike, so they can all mutually appreciate the landscape.”

He said it was not just about tourism impacting the environment, but also about the environment impacting tourism.

Mr Kuilamu highlighted that a sustainable coastal environment should always continue to encourage locals and tourists.

Head of school Professor Marcus Stephenson said such initiative was very important.
