34 high school students awarded USP certificates for business programme

Nasau villager Kaveni Waqawai intends to continue his business management studies at the University of the South Pacific (USP).

The 19-year-old received the outstanding award. He is the youngest in the family and enrolled for Year 13 at Nabua Secondary School this year.

Initially he wanted to become a vet but after attending the two weeks course, he now wants to become a businessman.

“I have learned a lot on how to setup a business. I want to become a successful businessman in 10 year’s time,” he said.

He was one of the 34 students who received certificates from the University of the South Pacific after completing a two-week Pilot Summer School for high school entrepreneurs at Nabua Secondary School.

The course, which is offered by USP, in partnership with Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) and Nabua Secondary School is focused on Year 12 and 13 students where they will learn how to set up businesses.

Mr Waqawai’s father, Aminiasi Rabalabala, 61, was proud of his son’s achievement. Mr Rabalabala, who is a fisherman, came in from Vanua Levu to attend his son’s graduation.

“I am so happy and proud of my son’s achievement. I haven’t seen my son for so many months,” he said.

He said this was only the beginning for his youngest son and must achieve more in life.

Mr Rabalabala said he will spend Christmas and New Year with his son in Suva before leaving for Vanua Levu on January 2, next year.
