Provincial rugby champion BLK Nadroga has offered to assist other Major Unions so that they can be competitive in the 2016 Skipper Cup and Farebrother Sullivan Challenge competitions.

Nadroga Rugby president Jikoibau Matawalu raised the issue during the Fiji Rugby Union the special general meeting in Suva yesterday.

“There is definitely lack of quality players with some unions playing in the Skipper Cup competition.

“We have surplus players who need game time,” he said.

“We are willing to offer our players on the player-loan scheme.”

Matawalu suggested that Unions could loan players for $500 each.

“At the moment we are doing it in a very indirect way and we have seen it working,” Matawalu said.

“Most of our players are moving to Suva to work and some are even with the Fiji Corrections Service and they  play for Namosi.

“We have players employed with the Fiji Police Force, National Fire Authority and the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces playing for Suva.

“The players are benefitting as they have been provided employment since there is life after rugby.”

Matawalu said unions who could not provide employment for the players can use the player- loan scheme programme.

“This is something to assist Unions who have a very small player-base.”

Ovalau Rugby president Seresio Druguta commended the proposal.

And hopes the FRU makes a good decision which could assist in the development of rugby in Fiji.

“Getting players from bigger unions like Nadroga will raise the level of competition,” Druguta said.

“I hope the FRU will assist in the player-loan scheme.”
