Open Day, Christmas at the Museum

The Fiji Museum yesterday held its last Open Day for this year in style with a Christmas party.

The Open Day, which is held monthly, was attended by children from the Homes of Hope, residents of Samabula Senior Citizens Home and members of the public were treated to lunch and witnessed Beqa fire walking ceremony, pottery making as well as Christmas carols by the Caubati Methodist Youth Choir.

Fiji Museum director Adi Meretui Ratunabuabua said: “This is part of our Christmas celebration where we present Christmas gifts to the Children and the residents of the Senior Citizens Home.”

Adi Ratunabuabua said the Open Day was aimed at engaging children on their heritage since most of these activities were mostly done in expensive hotels.

“We have brought the idea to life right here at the Fiji Museum for all our children to have a look and know more of their culture,” she said.

Akesa Nace, 14, of Happy Home in Vatuwaqa said she was glad to visit the Fiji Museum for the first time.

“I am happy to be here at the Fiji Museum as this is my first visit to the museum and I learned a lot of history and also came to see the vilavilairevo – traditional fire walking ceremony and also enjoyed some lovo,” Akesa said.
