Fiji is preparing for the OFC U17 Women Championship in Cook Islands next month.

This is in preparation for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Jordan 2016.

Fiji Football Association Women’s director Susan Wise said it would be a new and exciting experience for the young reps.

“This is the first time that we are sending a female U17 team to compete overseas,” Wise said.

“Things were difficult in the beginning for us because most of the girls took part in the Inter-District Championship (IDC) and got injured.

“But they have recovered and really looking forward as most of them have not travelled overseas before, let alone taken part in such a tournament.

“We have been training really hard for this and we are looking to have a good outing, not just looking to compete and qualify but to also learn and gain experience.”

Fiji is in Group B with Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and hosts Cook Islands while Group A sees New Caledonia, New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals.

New Zealand has won the only two previous editions of the OFC U-17 Women’s Championship, and after qualifying directly in 2014, will be shooting for a fourth-straight appearance at an U-17 Women’s World Cup. Edited by Osea Bola
