Suresh Kumar is looking at relocating his family to a safer site because of flash flooding.

He and his family of Wailea settlement, Vatuwaqa, Suva, were hit again by another flash flood during torrential rain on Saturday night.

Mr Kumar said he had lost count of the number of flash floods that had affected them.

“During the heavy rain last Saturday night, the water  came to our house and this is not the first time it had happened to us; when there is heavy rain this area is always flooded.

“We live in fear with the fact our house might get flooded during heavy rains and sometimes our children are not sent to school because the roads are flooded,” Mr Kumar said.

“Sometimes by the time my son reaches school, his uniform is wet because of the flood waters;  he had to walk through the flood waters to get to the road and catch the bus to school.”

He said they had no choice but to remain in Wailea  for the last four years due to financial constraints.

“I am trying to get a piece of land where I can relocate my family and hopefully we will be able to find it sometime soon.”

Mr Kumar moved from Labasa in search for employment opportunities to provide for his family.

Wailoku landslide

Meanwhile, heavy rain triggered a landslide at Wailoku Road near Tamavua last Saturday night causing the closure of half of the road.

The FultonHogan Hiways workers cleared the debris and it took them five hours to clear the  road for traffic to return to normal.

Wailoku Community Post constable Waisale Vuni said no one was injured in the landslide.

“We have not received any complaints from the residents about the damage done to their properties,” he said.

A Wailoku resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said flooding and landslides were major problems in their community when it rained heavily.
