Nadi murder accused Mohammed Shamil Sahib shocked people in the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday when he said: “I have a reason I killed my wife.”

He confidently uttered those words infront of Magistrate Siromi Turaga.

He is charged with the murder of his wife, Maureen Yashmin Nisha, 26, on December 14.

Her body was discovered three days later at a vacant land near Saunaka Village, Nadi.

Sahib was escorted to court yesterday by three police officers.

When Magistrate Turaga explained to Sahib his rights to legal representation, Sahib replied that he did not apply for any legal representation because he had a reason for killing his wife.

This caused a commotion inside the courtroom as people were baffled by his comment.

Magistrate Turaga said murder was an indictable offence and told Sahib that he could file for his plea in the High Court.

Sahib waived his right to legal representation and chose to represent himself.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Sunil Gosai made an application for the matter to be transferred to the High Court in Lautoka because of the seriousness of the charge and that Sahib be remanded at the Lautoka Corrections Centre.

Magistrate Turaga granted the application and transferred the matter to the High Court in Lautoka.

The case will be called on January 20.

Sahib has been remanded in custody.
