Anand Sami, 20, of Benai, Ba is the latest drowning victim after he drowned in the Vunisamaloa River in Ba while diving for shellfish with his family members on Tuesday.

The deceased’s body was found and conveyed to the Ba Mission Hospital awaiting post mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Close family friend and neighbour Irene Singh, 46, said the drowning victim’s mother, Shakuntala Ganpati, was too distraught to speak to the media.

Mrs Singh said the victim, who was the youngest of six siblings, had left with family members to catch shellfish at 9am on Tuesday.

“It was raining heavily so the tide was also high and his family members started coming out of the water and called him to also come out.

“Usually he ties one rope around a half cut 20 litre gallon and the other around his waist, dives in the river to get the shell fish and then comes back up to up to put the shellfish in the gallon but the tide was strong and he couldn’t handle the weight of the gallon as it was full of shellfish so it sank and dragged him down with it,” she said.

Mrs Singh said family members heard him scream that the gallon was too heavy and sighted his arms waving above his head three times before he finally drowned.

“People tried to save him but the tide was really too high and they could not do much.

“We felt really sad when we heard the news yesterday because he was a good and hardworking boy, always caring about the family and always respects everybody,” she said.

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.

“The victim was diving for fresh water mussels with his father in the Vunisamaloa River in Ba yesterday when the tragic incident is alleged to have occurred.”
