Flashflood Damages Homes

Families of Wainadoi village had a sleepless night on Monday after most of their homes were flooded because of heavy rain.
The village comprises of about 20 homes.
Roko Tui Namosi, Ratu Waisake Tuisese, said upon visiting the village yesterday morning, they gathered that almost all the homes in the village were flooded at about 9pm on Monday.
Ratu Tuisese said the Namosi Provincial Council was happy with how the villagers reacted when the flashflood hit their village.
There was no life lost, but most homes suffered damage.
Single mother, Merelivani Naqiolevu’s home was the worst affected.
The 42-year-old florist said she was at another home when someone alerted her at about 8pm that flood waters had entered her home.
“I had to wade through flood waters to reach my house. Inside our home, the water level was up to my chest and I managed to only save a mattress, three pillows and a blanket,” she said.
“I tried saving other things, but it was too late because the water level inside the house was rising quickly.
“It was about 2am when the water receded. We didn’t sleep at all. The floodwaters took the floors of my home too.
“With Christmas just two days away, I think I will just have to make do with what we have left,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ratu Waisake confirmed that the council and Namosi Provincial administrator, are discussing the setting up of evacuation centres if similar disaster hits in the coming weeks.
