mps picked for top
development body
Two MPs have been appointed to represent the Fijian Parliament in a top world development body.
They are Government backbencher and former permanent secretary for Education Mr Brij Lal and chartered accountant Aseri Radrodro.
The international body is the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation (GPEDC). It will help the international community adopt a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to guide global action on poverty eradication and sustainable development through to 2030.
The MPs’ term is for one year and they were selected on the basis of their knowledge and professional skills in a highly technical assignment by Parliament.
This process is slightly different to the normal procedure of asking for two nominees from both sides of the House.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union had written to the Fijian Parliament asking for two names. IPU is organizing parliamentary participation throughout the world. It says members of the Public Accounts and Development Co-operation Committees are particularly well suited for the role. Mr Lal is a member of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs. Mr Radrodro is a member of the Public Accounts Committee.
Mr Lal and Mr Radrodro will be “Parliament’s focal points”. Their role is to:
n Co-ordinate with the Government’s national co-ordinator and with other MPs to convey Parliamentarian perspectives during the monitoring process
n Participate in in-country dialogue on the monitoring findings.
