14 Months for Drug Offences

Two men were sentenced at the Labasa Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
Baogo Larua and Eliki Veitebe appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon.
Larua was charged with one count of unlawful cultivation and one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs while Veitebe was charged with two counts of unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs.
Both men were sentenced to one year two months in prison.
The court heard that Larua was arrested on December 15 where he was found in possession of 3.7grams of dried marijuana leaves and two grown marijuana plants.
However, since he was a first-offender, he would serve only three months and 11 months would be suspended for a period of two years.
If the accused committed further crimes during the two years he would then serve the full sentence.
Meanwhile, Veitebe’s first count involved a 414.3-gram marijuana plant and second count was a 3.7-gram marijuana plant.
His final sentence was also three months with 11 months suspended for two years.
