Churchill Park Ready In July

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra says the Churchill Park development will be completed and ready for a grand opening by July.

He said the project consisted of three phases with the second phase involving earthworks nearing completion.

“Right now we are almost finished with Phase Two and we hope to start Phase Three, the making of the tracks by January,” he said.

“There are some delays because of weather conditions and funding because some processes need to be followed.”

Mr Nakauvadra said the total estimated cost of the project is about $5.5million.

He said they also told the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association that it would be impossible to hold the 2016 Coca-Cola Games there because the tracks won’t be ready by then.

“We hope to host the first ever Coca-Cola Games in Lautoka by 2017 however the schools Deans Rugby competition will depend on the readiness of the ground,” he said.

“We don’t want to have a soft opening; the only way to celebrate it big is to also have a very big sporting event on the same day next year.”

Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry administrator Mohammed Salim said, “Well I think it’s a real bonus for Lautoka to have a project worth millions such as this in our vicinity.”
