While many Fijians spread Christmas cheer with gifts and well wishes, a father of four in Labasa is rejoicing over his best gift ever.

This one did not come in a wrapped parcel, but as an assistance from Government to help him provide for his family.

Sairusi Maqosa, 37, of Malau Settlement, overnight has turned from being unemployed and struggling daily to feed his family, to a small scale businessman.

He now owns a fishing business, thanks to Government through the Northern Development Programme (NDP).

“I consider myself as being blessed this Christmas,” he said showing off a new fibreglass boat and its 40-horsepower outboard engine anchored metres from his home. It was given by NDP last week.

Mr Maqosa is a qualified boat master. His boat is fully equipped and is licensed.

He now hires fishermen to help in his daily catch

“This is the best Christmas gift I ‘ve ever received. It will help improve my family and help me buy school stationery for my four children.

“I was a fisherman struggling daily for my family’s livelihood before, so I asked for Government’s assistance to help me operate a small scale fishing business. I pleaded for help so that I can look after my family.

“I thank the Northern Development Programme for assisting me. I will ensure that all my seven crew members use  life jackets because safety is paramount.

“Trips out to sea depend on the weather conditions. During favourable weather conditions, a good catch could earn me $125 a trip after expenses are deducted,” he said.
