Murder Accused Dutt In Court, Remanded
Anil Dutt (Middle), 57, charged with one count of murder escorted to cell by Police constable Peni Tuicai (left) and Police Inspector Yasin Ali (Right) after his first court hearing at Suva Magistrate Court, yesterday.

The man charged with the murder of a woman at a Suva guesthouse has been remanded in Police custody.

Anil Dutt, 57, appeared before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa at the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday. No plea was taken.

Dutt was limping and in pain. He grimaced with every step he took as he was escorted by Police to court.

He was barefoot and sporting a white dressing over a wound on his neck and he kept pulling up his long pants.

Police Inspector Yasin Ali told the court Dutt had tried to commit suicide.

Mr Boseiwaqa approved Inspector Ali’s request that Dutt  be remanded in Police custody until Monday, when he would be handed over to the Corrections remand centre.

Inspector Ali said this would be in the best interest of Dutt. He said Dutt needed to undergo medical examination.

Dutt asked the court if he could be given three days to visit the hospital for medical reasons.

The court granted his request but with the condition that he was under the supervision of Police or Corrections officers.

Mr Boseiwaqa told Dutt he had no authority to hear the case because this was an indictable offence.

Dutt will reappear at the Suva Magistrates Court on January  8 when his case will be transferred to the High Court.
