The Fiji Football Association will vote for a candidate who supports development for third world countries, says Rajesh Patel.

The Fiji FA president made the call as seven candidates are vying to replace Sepp Blatter in the FIFA president election on February 26

Blatter and Uefa boss Michel Platini have been suspended for eight years from all football-related activities following an ethics investigation.

They were found guilty of breaches surrounding a £1.3m (F$4.11m) “disloyal payment” made to Platini in 2011.

The Fifa ethics committee found Blatter and Platini had demonstrated an “abusive execution” of their positions.

“Now that Sepp Blatter has been suspended we will be focusing our attention on the candidates who will support third world countries,” Patel said.

“No one can predict what will happen, but there are new presidents coming in all the time. But for us at Fiji FA, we are looking for someone who will grow the standard of football in all areas.

“Finance is a huge part of growing the sport and in order to grow, teams need to be able to travel for friendly games or for tournaments.

“Small countries develop by playing against teams and travelling, so finance is a factor that we face difficulty with most of the time.”

Despite Blatter’s suspension, Patel said he still had done a lot for football, but they were looking forward to February 26.

“Regardless of Sepp Blatter’s suspension, he has done some good for football while serving his term and that is something everyone knows,” he said.

“But with a New Year we are looking forward not only to the elections but also a good year ahead for football in Fiji especially with the Rio Olympics in Brazil coming up,” he said.
