Yes, Parliament Can Change Committees

University of Auckland law expert Bill Hodge has thrown some light onto a debate over parliamentary standing committees.

The question is: Can Parliament change the Standing Orders which govern the composition and operations of the standing committees?

Of course it can. The often-quoted Hodge told Radio New Zealand International a motion by the whole of Parliament could limit or terminate standing committee functions.

That might not have been the answer some of the RNZI types were hoping for given their anti stance on Fiji.

But it is consistent with the legal opinions of some prominent members of the legal profession here.

So we can expect changes in the New Year.

It’s got to start from the Public Accounts Committee which has made so much noise and fuss this year you might think someone’s trying to be bigger than Parliament. It might require some surgical precision to bring it in line with other standing committees.

Watch for changes there.
