Mariners Warned To Be Prepared

Police are urging all mariners to be well prepared during this rainy weather.

Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri made the plea after six children and six adults were found safe at the Lautoka Wharf after they were reported missing at sea last Saturday.

It was reported that they were trying to get to Lautoka in a fiberglass boat when they developed engine problems between Savala and Vio Island.

“A search and rescue team of Police and MSAF officials (Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji) had been organised to look for the six people and they were found to be safe,” he said.

“Investigations are still underway at the moment to try and pinpoint the cause of the engine failure.”

Mr Sokomuri said the six people had a mobile phone which they used to contact the authorities.

“The group was fortunate they had a means of communication,” he said.

“We are strongly urging marines to take precautionary measures before going out.”
