Weather Centre Monitors Two Disturbances

The Fiji Meteorological Service is currently monitoring two tropical disturbances to the North of Fiji.
Director Ravind Kumar confirmed these are tropical disturbances 05F and 06F.
“Their development is due to the warmer sea surface temperatures, good westerly winds to the North of the system coupled with the constant southeast winds to the South of the system,” he said.
He said that Tropical Disturbance 05F was located near North of Vanua Levu of Northern Vanuatu and 324km West-northwest of Rotuma whilst Disturbance 06F was located West of Faleleo, Samoa and 389km northeast of Cikobia Island.
“Neither of the system is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone by tomorrow,” he said.
“Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre Nadi (RSMC) is closely monitoring the development of both the tropical disturbances and other low pressure systems to the North of Fiji.”
Mr Kumar said at this stage, Fiji was under no threat however members of the public are advised to remain cautious.
“As members of the public will be moving around during this festive season, they are encouraged to remain alert and keep updated with latest weather bulletins,” he said.
“We are still in the tropical cyclone and wet season. Mariners need to keep updated with marine weather forecasts before planning their journeys.
“A moist east to southeast wind flow is expected to prevail over the country. Occasional showers over the eastern parts and interior of the larger islands,” he said.
He said there would be fine weather elsewhere, apart from afternoon or evening showers, isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls to be expected.
