Death Taxi Accused Remanded

Charged for death of man, 22, at Laucala Beach
A taxi driver charged in relation to the death of 22-year-old Maika Delai last Saturday at Laucala Beach in Suva has been remanded in custody.
Sailosi Baleisuva Mara is charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of failing to comply with requirements after an accident.
He appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele at the Nasinu Magistrates Court at Valelevu, yesterday.
The court heard that on December 26, Mara was driving a taxi with registration number LT651 along Ratu Dovi Road when it allegedly hit Mr Delai resulting in his death.
The court also heard that Mara failed to stop after the accident and failed to report the accident to Police.
Mara asked the court for bail saying that he was the sole breadwinner in his family, has four children and his family are renting.
Police prosecutor objected to bail saying that Mara was on bail for a case of an alleged assault.
The prosecutor also objected to bail on the grounds that Mara failed to report the accident to Police and that the case was of public interest.
Magistrate Ratakele ordered that Mara be remanded in custody before a decision is made on his bail application.
The case has been adjourned to next Monday.
