Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is hoping to expand their market to other destinations based on the price and payment premiums.

FSC Executive chairman Abdul Khan said the Fijian sugar buyers in recent years are basically the European Union (EU) based countries and South Korea.

“All the sugar from this year’s crushing season has been shipped out to destinations such as South Korea, London, Romania, Italy and Portugal,” Mr Khan said.

“All the sugar has been sold but we are holding a shortage shipment that will be sent out later.”

As to whether 2015 crushing season was better compared to 2014, Mr Khan said: “In some ways 2015 was an improvement on 2014 when comparing the quality of the crop and the price paid for our sugar.

“2015 season saw a high percentage of burnt cane being delivered and yet we were able to achieve a Tonnes of Cane to Tonnes of Sugar (TCTS) of 8.3.

“Although we made 5000 tonnes less sugar we actually received $14 million more for our sugar.”

2016 Plan
Mr Khan said FSC was optimistic that 2016 would be a good year and a good season.

“Based on the recent rain in nearly all the cane belt areas, we have seen a significant improvement in the crop health,” he said.

“Our 2016 strategy in terms of sugar production will continue.

“This means continuous incremental improvement to mill performance and reliability; continued maintenance and enhancement to the rail system.

“Also ensuring that all our people are adding value to what we do as a company and as part of the sugar cane industry.”
