Lawaqa Park To Open Soon

The upgrading works at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka is at its final stages and expected to open in coming weeks.
The Fiji Sports Council executive Tiko Matawalu confirmed there was a bit of delay with construction works.
However he added the refurbishment of Lawaqa Park will be ready for the 2016 Bayleys Fiji’s Coral Coast 7s on January 14.
“Materials that were delivered from China were delayed and the weather was also a contributing factor to the delay,” Matawalu said.
“But everything is going on well and by looking at the construction works it will finish well before the Coral Coast 7s. We are happy with how everything is going.
Apart from the refurbishment of the pavilion an additional feature has being built.
“There is a Multipurpose Court that is being newly built. This is to cater for Volleyball, Netball tournaments and provide car parking as well for big tournaments,” he said.
Meanwhile $3 million was allocated from this year’s national budget for the upgrading works.
The ground was closed down last year and was only open to host a few Farebrother Challenge matches.
The upgraded sporting venue will also feature new changing rooms for teams.
“Once everything is done we will need the public to take care of the facility,” he said.
Matawalu who is the Nadroga Rugby Union president and also vice president of the Nadroga Football Association said their fans can get good sporting views in the coming Skipper Cup and also Skipper Tuna National Football League.
“Our fans can brace to witness spectacular views and tournament in the coming years,” he said.
