Parvati, a Labasa market vendor, was overjoyed when she won a Samsung Galaxy phone and $250 cash in the Westpac Mobile Banking competition.

The 68-year-old, originally from Dreketi-lailai, received her prize from Westpac Labasa-Personal Banking Manager Josevata Uluikade on Tuesday.

The mother of six children said for 40 years she had sold vegetables at the Labasa market and now she had decided to stop and focus on living a few years with her grandchildren.

“I applied for social welfare assistance and the Department of Social Welfare at the Labasa office told me to open a bank account at Westpac.

“That is when a kind staff told me about the competition and I simply agreed to the terms of competition,” Ms Parvati said.

“However, I didn’t have the intention to win as I was more eagerly waiting to receive application approval from Department of Social Welfare,” she said.

Her son, Rakesh Chand informed her that she won herself a mobile phone and cash. She was surprised and overjoyed.

“Something is always better than nothing and with this thought, I thanked God for giving me some money to buy some things for myself for the upcoming year,” Ms Parvati said.

Westpac Head of Marketing Nirmala Nambiar said $250 cash would be directly credited into Ms Parvati’s account.

“The Westpac Mobile Banking first winner was from Lautoka and second from Labasa and both received the same kind of prizes,” Ms Nambiar said.

“The third draw would be done on December 31 and the winner would get $500 prize money,” she added. Edited by:
