Stakeholders Welcome Fiji Airways Flights San Francisco, See Many New Opportunities

The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the move by Fiji Airways to begin direct flights into San Francisco, USA, twice a week, in season.

Chamber president, Dr Ram Raju, said the delightful news which was perhaps long overdue.

“I’m sure this sector has a lot to offer as there are tens of thousands of former Fiji citizens residing in this area who would be just be as excited apart from the tourists of course,” he said.

“Many were always suggesting that this sector should be included as an addition to the Los Angeles flights.”

Dr Raju said this is a welcome connectivity that will augur well for tourism as well as cargo and add more employment as a result.

“It’s very likely that fresh agricultural produce and even seafood exports will gain momentum to this area in USA,” he said.

“This additional connection to North America will undoubtedly be welcomed and adds another feather to the cap.

“Hopefully this will prove to be successful and a fruitful connection that can be sustained throughout the year, rather than a few months only.”

Exports
The Fiji Fresh Produce Exporters Association also welcomed this new flight route and looks forward to maximise this new route sector.

Fiji Fresh Produce Exporters Association President Rizwan Khan said, “It will present new market opportunity as San Francisco and surrounding areas has a sizable Fijian/Pacific Island Population.”

He added that Fiji’s Fresh Produce will have a potential supply market.

“A reconnaissance trade scoping mission would be proposed to the Minister for Trade and Director for Trade for their review,” Dr Raju said.

“If approved, Association members will be able to explore this market and have Fiji’s Fresh Produce a new market segment to supply into.”

Mr Khan said Fijians and other Pacific Islanders living in San Francisco can look forward to having supply of fresh produce from Fiji.
