Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday called for rugby fans to support the ‘Road to Gold’ fundraising campaign.

The campaign to help our Vodafone Fijian 7s and Telecom Fijiana teams win gold in August was launched in Suva by the FRU president.

“This is a good initiative by group of fans to get us involved,”Bainimarama said.

“With Rio a few months away I’m very excited about the Olympics not only for the rugby teams but all our teams taking part.

“It’s the initiative that we should all support. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come in and assist our team.”

Bainimarama confidently said Fiji will win gold in Rio.

“Fans always say we should contribute and this is an opportunity for all of us to assist our teams.

“I’m confident we will win gold.”

Team Fiji chef de mission to Rio Cathy Wong said rugby has set the pace for other national federations.

“FRU has set the pace for other national federations as this will really take the burden off the athletes,” Wong said.

The fundraising committee consists of individuals who are executives in their respective fields aiming to raise $800,000.

The 2016 Rio Olympics is scheduled for August 5-21.
