It will be a busy month for the Fiji Table Tennis Association as they have a number of events starting the New Year on a high note.

The association will be hosting the Basic Umpires Course (January 11-16), Para Table Tennis Training Camp (January 21-24) and the Fiji Open along with the Para Tennis Regional competition (January 25-26).

National development officer Harvi Yee said 2015 had been a fruitful year.

“We’ve noticed the interest in table tennis from young players which is a plus for us,” Yee said.

“Our aim all along was to build this minor sport because anyone can play it regardless of age, race or physical ability.

“It is very hard for a minor sport to grow but that is why we hold frequent events to attract those who want to learn the sport and we are fortunate enough to get in young players because they have the potential to grow and learn the sport from a young age.”

One of the New Year’s resolutions for FTTA is to get their U15 and U18 at a level where they will be able to compete with players in New Zealand and Australia.

“Eventually we want our players to be competitive and that is something that we will be working towards in the New Year,” she said.

“Our biggest opponents are Australia and New Zealand and so we want our juniors to be able to be competitive against them.

“This will not only help grow the popularity of the sport but also improve our young players.

“We are really looking forward to the New Year and what it will bring. We will continue to grow the sport while at the same time building our reps to compete professionally on the world stage.”
