The Disavu 7s rugby team from Naivucini, Naitasiri sold dalo in the festive season to prepare for their Australian tour later this month.

The team will take part in the Toowoomba, Queensland on January 16-17 and the Lake Macquarie 7s in Sydney on February 20.

Team manager Jone Tukana said the two tournaments would provide a good exposure for the young players.

“We’ve players who are villagers, some playing in Nadroga club games and two players Semi Rasolea and Elima Salabuka are currently in the Naitasiri squad,”Tukana said.

The team raised $17,220 to cover visa fees and airfares.

“Most are farmers so they sell dalo and fundraise to meet the cost.

“We lodged our visa last month and hopefully we get good results on Monday,” he said.

The team will be coached by former Vodafone Fijian 7s team manager Paula Biu and Solo Ravono who is also the committee member for the Central Coast 7s.

Ravono assisted the team to book a spot in the two tourneys.

Disavu 7s team will be accompanied by Savusavu-based Savuiqali team and Senimako from Namosi for the Lake Macquarie 7s in Sydney.

“This is a great opportunity for these local players to expose their talents in overseas tournaments.”

Bolstering the side would be former national U20 rep Filimoni Seru Junior.

Naivucini have produced national reps like Malakai Labaibure. He was the first Naivucini villager to don the national jumper in 1964. The others are former national 7s rep Lepani Nabuliwaqa, Adriu Rinakama and Vodafone Flying Fijians centre Levani Botia.

The team will depart on January 13..
