Cyclone Hits Roofs, Downs Big Trees

Ono-i-Lau villagers reported powerful winds of severe Tropical Cyclone Ula were hitting them at 9pm last night.

Crops and banana trees were badly damaged, they reported.

Howling winds could be heard as the Fiji Sun spoke to the villagers by phone. The reception deteriorated rapidly before it became impossible to hear them.

Solomone Turagakacivi of  Vuci Village was talking before communication was cut off.

Mr Turagakacivi said earlier: “The wind speed accelerated quickly. The strong winds can blow a person off the ground. We have been in lockdown mode from 6pm.”

Church services for Ogea, Fulaga, Namuka, Cicia and Ono-i-Lau were cancelled. Rain accompanied the winds.

Ogea, Lau

Villager Epeli Moto said two families were sheltering at the village school after their corrugated iron roofs were blown away  by strong winds and heavy rain.

Namuka-i-Lau

Villager Suka Rokobuli said the heavy rain and strong winds lasted for the whole day and  villagers were instructed to stay indoors. No major damage reported.

Cicia Island

Three evacuation centres were mobilised. But no one had moved in when this edition went to press last night.

Fulaga Island

The villagers reported some big trees had been uprooted. No one was allowed to go outside.
