Search On For Missing Fisherman

A search has been activated for two men who were failed to return home after a fishing trip last Tuesday.
The two are 49 year old Rajeshwar Naidu and 45 year old Edward Lavish both of Karavi, Ba and had left their residence on the 29th of December, 2015 for a fishing trip on board a red 27ft half cabin boat named JADE and have since failed to return home to date.
A report was lodged at the Ba Police Station last night and we have contacted Police at the Nabouwalu Police Station as information received is that the two were fishing off Yadua Island.
Meanwhile the search for two fishermen of Volivoli, Rakiraki who have been missing since the 1st of this month has been called off temporarily due to adverse weather conditions.
The search will continue when the weather improves.
However Police continue to make their presence known in the Volivoli community as reports have come in that people are trying to conduct their own search and rescue efforts.
We continue to advise relatives and family members not to venture out to sea until it is deemed safe to do so as we don’t want to record any more loss of lives.
Again as the Fiji Meteorological Office issues a gale warning and strong wind warning for parts of the Fiji group the Fiji Police is once again pleading with mariners to take the warnings seriously.
Stakeholders are issuing these warnings for your own safety and all efforts are being put in by the media as well as authorities to ensure you are well informed of what is happening and what to expect.
However the onus will be on every individual to think of their safety and that of others. We need everyone’s cooperation if we are to prevent further loss of life. Because as well as the risk of putting yourself in danger there are others who will have to put their safety on the line in the execution of search and rescue efforts.
If this means deferring your trip until the warnings are lifted then so be it, as we need everyone to be safe during these times.
