The Fiji Deaf team presented their itatau (traditional farewell) to  President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konousi Konrote at Government House for the first time in Suva yesterday.

The team departs for the 2016 Australian Deaf Games in Adelaide on Thursday which is also a qualifying tournament for the 2017 Deaflympics in Turkey and Deaf Rugby World Cup.

Chef de mission Venasio Tamainai said it was an honour for them to meet President Konrote.

First time

“This is the first time we are presenting our  itatau to the President and the athletes are just excited to meet him,” Taimainai said.

“Before when we would go overseas for competitions, we would just leave but we decided to do things a little differently this year.”

25 players and four officials are travelling and taking part in 7s rugby, mixed touch rugby, mixed netball, netball, athletics and table tennis.

“It is not every day we are given an opportunity like this to compete at a level with other athletes and this will give us a chance to learn and grow because that is something we have always wanted and working towards.

“At the same time, we are also trying to qualify for the Deaflympics in Turkey and Deaf Rugby World Cup. That is our major aim and so we are trying to kill two birds with one stone.”

Meanwhile, President Konrote wished the team well.

“We wish you well and every success, you should be proud to compete in a very unique and special competition just for you,” President Konrote said.

“Always remember when you travel abroad to compete, you are going with our thoughts and prayers and don’t forget to come back with medals.”
