The first game in the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 World Cup in Bangladesh for Fiji will be crucial as they look to get a good start.

The team leaves the country tomorrow for Brisbane where they will be playing warm-up matches before flying to Bangladesh to prepare for their first game against England on January 27.

“We have been working really hard over the last couple of months in preparing ourselves for this very moment ever since we qualified for the World Cup,” team captain Saimoni Tuitoga said.

“We’re playing against the top teams in the world where cricket is their number one sport and we need to be on our best form.

“Our priority right now is our first game against England and we need to start well.

“The first game is always important and honestly we just cannot wait to go out there and show everyone what we have and what we are capable of.”

The 18-year-old from Komo, Lau native and John Wesley College student is also the first age grade player to receive a full sponsorship from an Australian company. Custom Sports provided him with cricket bats, gloves, batting pads, wicket keeping pads, wicket keeping gloves and clothing.

“I’ve had a good preparation with the help of Custom Sports and I want to go out there prove myself, that time and effort spent on me was not for nothing,” he said.

“But nothing can be achieved without the help of everyone in the team, I’m proud of the boys and how much commitment and hard work they showed.

“Our parents are proud of us and now the nation will be looking to see what we have to offer, we want to go there and not only make ourselves proud but Fiji.”
