PM’S North Tour Postponed

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s tour of the Northern Division had been postponed because of the bad weather.

This was confirmed by the PM’s personal staff officer (PSO1) Vilikesa Waqatairewa yesterday

“He was supposed to leave by the Patterson Brothers Shipping Co Ltd ferry, Spirit of Harmony today (yesterday),” he said.

“The Patterson Brothers Shipping Co Ltd advised him of the change in shipping schedule.”

When contacted yesterday the director Patterson Brothers Shipping Co Ltd, Trevor Patterson told the Fiji Sun that they had to cancel the sailing scheduled yesterday because of adverse weather conditions – strong westerly winds and 2.0m seas and swells impacting into Nabouwalu jetty.

“Due to these conditions the ships will not be able to berth safely and conduct loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles safely at Nabouwalu,” he said.

He said since this condition presented a risk to passengers, cargo and the ship, management and ships masters had jointly decided to cancel sailing until prevailing weather / sea conditions were favourable.

“We expect conditions to improve by Thursday, January 7 when services could resume.”

However, he said if conditions improved by late yesterday and today services could resume as early as Wednesday.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will advise via radio announcement when we consider it safe to take the trip.”

He said they understood passengers needed to return to Suva or Labasa but their safety and that of the cargo and ship was their priority.

“We request your understanding and apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

He said from the weather updates they got TC Ula was currently moving SW but strong westerly winds caused by the cyclone continued to affect southern and western coastal areas including Nabouwalu.

Speaking from Nabouwalu yesterday, Wainunu chief, Tui Wainunu, Ratu Orisi Baleitavea said they would wait for the good weather to receive the Prime Minister.

PM’s programme for Bua:

  •  Commissioning of the Vuya Grid Extension at Vuya Village.
  • Visit to the new irrigation canal.
  • Opening of the new Nabouwalu – Dreketi Highway at Nasarawaqa Village
  • Commissioning the new water purification project  at Naividamu Village.

The tour of the Northern Division will carry on when the weather is fine.
