The acting Commissioner of Police, Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho wants special constables regularised.

He said he was going to meet with the Minister for Defence about this matter.

The acting Police Commissioner said the special constables were recruited to work when needed, but they had currently been working full-time like regular Police officers.

He praised their hard work, saying they were working long hours, but are wearing a special constabulary uniform. Brigadier-General Qiliho said there was no need to have different uniforms in the Police Force.

“We’re working on this and we will soon see all in the Force wearing the same uniform,” he said.

Speaking on the payout to special constables, he said a team of officers continued with the verification process and once completed, a report would be tabled to the Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for approval.

“If all goes well we are looking at a timeline by the end of January to make the payout for the extra hours for special constables,” he said.

Currently there are 1052 special constables.
