The newly appointed Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Malakai Finau, yesterday sent a team from the Lands Department and its Environment Unit to investigate claims that gravel extraction in Navua River had started again.

Department of Environment had already issued a ‘stop work notice’ to Chinese All Earthworks Limited but Navua businessman, William Danford yesterday said that gravel extraction had started again and he had reported it to the Navua police.

Their reaction – “We will wait for the meeting of stakeholders in Navua on Thursday.”

Mr Finau said if the company was saying that their licence was issued by the iTaukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB), then they should be mindful of the fact that the river belonged to the State.

They must, he said comply with what was spelt out in the licence.

“TLTB issues licence for extracting gravel on native land but this case they are extracting gravel from the Navua River,” he said.

The stop work notice was issued because the company had breached the Environment Act.

He said the team would submit a report to him and would make further comments.

Mr Finau said for his new job, his first task would be to look into the Ministry’s Process.
