Fijian Under -19 cricket rep Peni Volavola aims to give his personal best for the team during the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh from January 22 to February 14.

The 18-year-old from Waitabu, Lakeba, Lau is among the best players the coaching staff is banking on.

Volavola scored 71 runs when they beat Papua New Guinea in the Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific Men’s Trophy in New Zealand in February last year.

“Being part of this team and representing my country means the world to me,” Volavola said.

“Not many people are good at everything and to have that feeling of being good at something, is amazing.

“When I joined this team, I never thought I would actually be going to a World Cup and playing against and watching some of the best teams in the world.

“Not everyone is good academically and with so much talent in Fiji, only those who worked hard have the opportunity to represent Fiji.

“I’ve a chance to see the world playing cricket and at the same time meet a lot of people and broaden my knowledge and make new friends.”

Knowing that he is one of the most valued players in the team, Volavola wants to do his team proud and help them to at least pull a win as Fiji needs to win two games out of their three pool games in order to qualify for the second round.

“I want to win and I want to make my team happy and help them win. I know how proud that would make everyone and what that would mean for the team,” he said.

“This is a huge opportunity for us to learn as much as we can and I want to grasp this opportunity with both hands.”

Volavola aims to support his family by playing cricket.

“I want to help my family and support them and I feel through cricket I can do that. All I want to do is just train and work hard to be the best player I can be.”

The team departs today for Brisbane before flying to Bangladesh for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup where they are pooled with England, Zimbabwe and West Indies.
