Bigger, Better Carnival This Year

The Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival Committee will meet this month to discuss carnival preparations this year.
Committee chairman Satish Kumar said they plan to have the carnival in June.
The carnival, which is a joint effort between the Fiji Police Force and the Northern community, aims at promoting better relations and reducing crime in the North.
Mr Kumar said the annual event started in 2012 and was usually hosted at Subrail Park in Labasa.
“This year we planned to organise in a much better and bigger way and offer something new for the people of the Friendly North,” he said.
“Not only that this carnival helps to build relations and reduce crime but also contributes to the improvement and development of the Northern Division.”
Mr Kumar said the carnival committee had used funds raised from the previous carnivals on many projects including more than $100,000 used towards community projects.
“Community projects such as donating air conditioners to Nasea Health Centre in Labasa Town, donated brush cutters to various youth groups, donated a total of $4500 to nine fire victim families in Labasa (each family received $500) and donated $3600 to Nabouwalu Police Station to repair police,” he said.
Mr Kumar said the committee had planned two community projects for this year.
“Constructing a shelter at Wainigadru in Cakaudrove Province and constructing a health centre between Tabia and Dreketi in Macuata Province.”
He added that the carnival committee was dedicated to building a better North and called on people’s support in the preparations towards the carnival.
