More help will be provided for the protection of Fijian women, says the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar.

She said the Multi-Agency Taskforce on the Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) would embark on new strategies this year to combat violence in Fiji.

The Taskforce, led by the Ministry, is made up of representatives from Government, United Nation (UN) agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs), Faith-based and civil society organisations.

“The purpose of these group is to progress some extremely important pieces of work that will ultimately result in providing women with support services and access to justice that they currently do not have,” Ms Akbar said.

“We need to have a comprehensive case management system that deals holistically with the welfare and well-being of women.

“We can have a better response and actually begin to work on some prevention frameworks to stop violence against women and children,” she said.

The ministry, last year, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Fiji Police Force to address crimes against women and children.
