The Central Chiefs Rugby Club aims to expose their players to an international tournament during the Bayley’s Coral Coast 7s this week at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. Coach Elina Tauba said they would be fielding two teams Central Chiefs One, Two.

“Since this is the only international 7s tournament held locally, this is actually the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our players,” Tauba said.

“This is considered top level competition because not only will there be national reps, but there will also be overseas teams as well.

“Our aim is to expose the players, have more fun, enjoy the game and have a broader picture of rugby because most of them play in small local competitions, so this is considered big for them.”

Facing teams such as the two Fijiana sides, Coastal Roosters, Tonga, Mystic Nights and Nadi Blazers, Tauba said the girls were looking forward to a challenge.

“We’re a very tough pool for both the Central Chiefs 1 and Central Chiefs 2 but we actually welcome the challenge because that is the only way we will learn,” she said.

“All in all the girls are really excited about this tournament and really looking forward to it and that is a good first sign, when your players are eager to play.”

Tauba also mentioned that impressing the national team selectors will be another target.

“Every one of these players has a dream of donning that white jersey, so when they step out onto that field they will be aiming to not only win, but showcase their talent.

“We understand that selectors will be out there scouting for new talents and that is something most of these girls are eyeing.

“They want to take their level of rugby to a whole new level and learn from the best and train with the best,” she said.
