A soldier with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has died mysteriously at his home in Vuci Road, Nausori.

Described as a loner by his family, 37-year-old Vereimi Ravunia Raikoti was found dead in his bathroom last Friday by his girlfriend, Ripa Tauribau.

Ms Tauribau travelled from her village, Mokani in Tailevu, to visit him.

The deceased’s cousin, Livai Tuinidau, said Ms Tauribau, upon entering the home, found her boyfriend lying dead in the bathroom.

“She came to call me to go and see him. When I saw him, I knew he was dead because his body looked pale and it was very cold,” Mr Tuinidau said.

“He always kept to himself and was a loner. He used to drink a lot alone inside his house. We are shocked and sad.

“Members of the Raikoti family are reeling in shock over the news,” Mr Tuinidau said.

“Most of the time we did not know if he is at his home until his girlfriend arrives to visit him. She would always clean the house and open the windows.

“He had gone two times for peacekeeping in Sinai and returned from Iraq last year. He was a very quiet person who minded his own business. It was always hard for us to tell whether he was around because his house was usually closed all the time,” he said.

Mr Tuinidau said Mr Raikoti was brought up in Cautata Village, also in Tailevu, and was the youngest and the only son in a family of four siblings.

He attended Ratu Sukuna Memorial School and Lelean Memorial School. He has been a soldier since leaving high school.

RFMF commanding officer Engineers Corp, Lieutenant-Colonel Semi Mocelutu said Mr Raikoti was recently deployed to Rabi Island for a rural development project.

His home was cordoned off when the Fiji Sun team visited the family yesterday.

Police have started investigations.
