Vodafone Fiji has highlighted plans to invest about $40 million this year to ensure they expand and grow their networks.

This ultimately, will mean even better services for their 750,000 customers.

Chief marketing officer, Rajnesh Prasad, said Vodafone Fiji, in the past 18 months, had invested in excess of $110 million to launch and expand its mobile network.

And as we enter the New Year, Mr Prasad said Vodafone Fiji’s main objective is to work on their data network.

“We plan to expand our data network and also expand our coverage to areas where we have very fringe or low coverage,” he said.

“And also one of the major barriers for this year is to expand our 4G network as well so that our customers get excellent network speed for 4G networks.”

Growth in data

The major trend noticed by Vodafone Fiji is the growth in terms of data services.

Mr Prasad revealed 50 per cent of their 750,000 or so customers were all using smart devices now and were using data services.

“So before there was quite a low number of customers using internet on their mobile phones,” he said.

“They were using dongles to use internet but now the trend is changing. The customers are moving into using internet, mostly on smart devices which are tablets and smart phones.”

“On our Vodafone network, the penetration has reached up to 50 per cent in terms of our customers using data services and data on their mobile phones which is a remarkable achievement.”

Challenges

Mr Prasad said one of the major challenges they were facing was not on the network front or on pricing of devices, but on customer education and awareness.

“Customers need to get used to how to use smart devices. That is one of the major issue we are facing,” he said.

“The customers will do something different, download a wrong app, do something to their smart phones and the data won’t work.

“So education/awareness is one of the key areas of focus for us this year and that is to ensure our customers learn about how to use smart devices.”

For this year

Vodafone Fiji customers can expect better prices and a variety of devices this year.

Mr Prasad said they also want to get more 4G devices so that customers can get hooked onto using 4G and better quality, better speeds.

“We are going to ensure we work on our network, expand our network, increase the capacity of our network and also bring in devices that are good and affordable for our customers,” he said.
