The Fijian Women Under-17 squad  left for the Cook Islands yesterday to play in the 2016 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) U17 Women’s Championship.

The Naomi Cavasiga-coached side plays their first match against hosts Cook Islands at 4pm today.

Assistant coach Lice Waqaliti said: “The only thing left for the girls to play as a team and defy the odd.”

“We started preparation last November after the IDC and the girls participated in the Ultimate Sports competition as well.”

Fiji is top seed in Pool B with Cook Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea while Pool A has and Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia and New Zealand.

“Most of the teams will be tough, but we will do our best. The girls need the support from members of the public.

“Our aim is to qualify for the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup in Jordan.”

The winner in Cook Islands qualify for  Jordan.
