The Fijian deaf team put up another impressive performance in the 2016 Australia Deaf Games Championships after winning the rugby 7s final last Thursday.

The Fijians walloped Queensland 31-14 in the final to bring home the gold medal.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Iliesa Delana commended the athletics and rugby teams performance in Adelaide.

“The teams performed well and we look forward to some members of the team to take part in the 2017 Deaflympics in Turkey,” Delana said.

“There are certain criteria they will have to meet to qualify and I need to meet with the Fiji Deaf Association and the Fiji National Sports Commission.

Tournament organiser Sam Cartledge said the Fijians were ruthless and unstoppable during the game.

“The rugby 7s was a sport not to be missed and proved to be a highlight with high scoring games and great sportsmanship on display from Queensland, Victorian and Fijian teams.

“The atmosphere was vibrant throughout the morning with the Fiji team demonstrating why rugby is their national sport taking out the grand final match against Queensland with a score of 14 – 31,” Cartledge said.
