It was almost midnight last Friday. The nightclubs in the capital were rocking with music, families spending quality time with each other and most of Fiji was fast asleep.

But there was a group of hardworking men on our roads who were sacrificing life’s simple pleasures to ensure that commuters enjoy a smooth and efficient ride.

Fulton Hogan Hiways is working tirelessly to ensure that not only is Fiji Road Authority’s deadline met, but that they give top-of-notch results.

About 20 men have been on Amra Street, the home of your Fiji Sun, these past few weeks in doing just that.

The work carried out is mainly strengthening the road surface using heaving-duty machinery that needed precision and accuracy.

This is a 303-metre-long road linking Foster and Freeston roads.

Johnny Green, who has been brought in from Nelson New Zealand, oversees and manages this area of Fulton Hogan’s project.

He is here for about a month until a next overseas-based manager comes along and takes over.

“We’ve just been brought over to help work with the guys especially all this project work,” Mr Green said.

“I’m here for about three weeks to a month and then there’s another guy coming from Australia to take over from me.

“We’re doing an initial training with the guys and bringing them up to speed.”

When asked to assess the local workers’ results, he said: “It’s good. Working with the local lads is fantastic. They’re all really keen to learn. Nothing ever seems to be in trouble. It’s really rewarding working with them.

“You’ve certainly got to have your wits out here because there’s a lot going on. The traffic’s really bad and that’s why we concentrate on night work.”
