Johan Leewai, son of former Labasa player Gordon Leewai, is the coach of Labasa football team in 2016.

Johan started coaching the Labasa team last week after Bal Sanju Reddy resigned.

Leewai, 40, and a father of three resigned as a coach for Dreketi team to join Labasa.

“I have been coaching Dreketi team since 2013 to 2015,”he said.

“But when I was given the opportunity to coach Labasa I accepted it.

“Training the team would not be new for me because my father played for Labasa and I also played for Labasa from 1993 to 2004.

“I also played for Savusavu in 2007 and later in 2010 was promoted as the coach for Savusavu. So I understand what’s involved. I have started training with the team as a build up to the Galaxy Premier League which will be held February 14 with Labasa’s first match against Dreketi. I’m trying all my best so that Labasa can qualify for the O-League which is my aim for this year.

“I’ve to prepare the team to defend their Fiji FACT title this year.

“My players are those that played in the Courts Inter-District Championship (IDC) last year.”

Meanwhile, Labasa Football Association vice- president Varun Anand confirmed that Reddy voluntarily resigned.

“Reddy is a teacher and he has been transferred to a primary school in Cakaudrove,” Anand said.

“Travelling from his school to Labasa daily to conduct training would be difficult for him and so considering the long distances he decided to resign.

“We are very thankful for his contribution over the years and we wish him well.”
